Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1937, is known as the wintering home of the endangered Whooping Cranes and a diverse habitat along the Texas Gulf Coast.
Established in 1937, Aransas National Wildlife Refuge encompasses over 115,000 acres of diverse habitat along the Texas Gulf Coast. It serves as the wintering home for the last wild flock of endangered Whooping Cranes and supports a variety of migratory birds and resident wildlife. Visitors can engage in activities such as driving the 16-mile auto tour, fishing from the pier, and walking trails with observation platforms. The refuge offers scenic views of San Antonio Bay and diverse wildlife habitats. The refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which is dedicated to wildlife conservation. Over 400 species of birds are attracted to the refuge due to its mild winters, bay waters, and abundant food supply. The refuge provides opportunities for volunteering and supports various conservation projects. Daily registration and fee payment are required for visitors. The visitor center is open Wednesday - Sunday. Hunting is permitted in designated areas during specific seasons with a permit.
